New Year's Hike at King-Swett Ranches   Saturday,  JAN  7, 2017
9:00 AM

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  King-Swett Ranches
Come explore the hills between Fairfield, Benicia, and Vallejo! You'll be led by expert Solano Land Trust guides who know this area—known as the King-Swett Ranches—inside out. They'll share insights about the birds and other wildlife that call this area home, and give you a great workout! Take advantage of this special opportunity if you can because the King-Swett Ranches are otherwise closed. Bring: a backpack with plenty of water and snacks, boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with tread for rugged, steep, and slippery off-trail terrain, long, sturdy pants and layered clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, protection from the elements (sun, wind, fog, rain). Recommended: binoculars, camera, bug repellent, hiking sticks, gaiters. Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be prepared: a strenuous pace hiking up to 6 miles off-trail, up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and thistle. The King-Swett Ranches are working ranches—cattle are free range so they roam as they please. Only heavy rain or high fire danger cancels—call Jim at 925-519-1834 if the weather is uncertain. Space is limited. Pre-registration recommended online.

DIRECTIONS: Meet promptly at the Park-and-Ride lot where McGary Road, Hiddenbrooke Parkway, and American Canyon Road intersect (on the Hiddenbrooke side of the American Canyon/Hiddenbrooke Parkway exit, off Interstate 80). Be ready to carpool or caravan from there.

Nature Walk at Lake Solano   Saturday,  JAN  7, 2017
10:00 AM

PUTAH CREEK COUNCIL & SOLANO COUNTY PARKS —  Lake Solano County Park
Join Lake Solano Rangers and Docents for a free, guided nature walk, “Winter Birds at Lake Solano,” at Lake Solano Park from 10 AM to noon. Meet at the Lake Solano Nature Center to begin your walk along the Shoreline Trail with your expert guide, Bob Rockwell. California enjoys mild winters, and that makes it an ideal spot for many migratory birds to spend the cooler months. At Lake Solano, a wide array of habitats means that visitors can observe a diverse assortment of birds and other wildlife. On this tour, we'll observe year-round residents and migratory visitors while taking in the natural beauty of Lake Solano Park. Loaner binoculars will be available. This event is a great opportunity to explore a local park that has much to offer: boating, picnic areas, wildlife viewing, and multiple hiking trails. Enjoy a day of strolling along Putah Creek while learning about local ecology and appreciating the beauty of this region. These activities are appropriate for all ages, and families and groups are welcome. Please prepare for the weather and variable conditions by bringing water, wearing sturdy shoes, and dressing in layers. The tour will be rescheduled in the event of heavy rain. A camera and binoculars are recommended. Continue to enjoy the beautiful scenery by picnicking or renting a campsite for the weekend on a first-come, first-served basis. The tour will be rescheduled in the event of heavy rain. Regsitering at www.putahcreekcouncil.org is recommended but not required. The day’s activities are free, and parking is only $6 per vehicle, payable at the day use entrance to the Park, across the street from the Nature Center. For questions, call Karin Young at Putah Creek Council, 530.795.3006.
