Trails and Tales: From Cobblestones to Counterfeiters   Saturday,  OCT  18, 2014

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  Rockville Trails Preserve
Join docent John McVicar for a moderate hike while he shares stories and lore about the local human history--from Patwin Indian projectile points to pioneer rock walls--along the way. Wear hiking boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with good tread, and long, sturdy pants and layered clothes that provide protection from the elements (sun, wind, fog, rain, cold). Hiking sticks, bug repellent, binoculars and a camera are also recommended. Heavy rain cancels. Call John if the weather is uncertain: 707-718-3498. High fire danger or heavy rain cancels. Rockville Hills Regional Park Trail Crew   Saturday,  OCT  18, 2014

CITY OF FAIRFIELD —  Rockville Hills Regional Park
The Rockville Trail Crew volunteer work days are scheduled for the third Saturday of every month from 9-12noon, rain or shine! Trail Crew volunteers provide technical assistance with trail maintenance and construction activities on the trails. Trail Crew volunteer duties consist of clearing rocks, trees, brush and other debris from proposed trail routes; build/repair walk ways, bridges or other structures; grade/fill existing trail paths to ensure user safety; and attend all required meetings and training sessions. Volunteers should bring water, gloves and a tool if available. Volunteers should wear layered clothing and sturdy shoes. A snack and beverage provided for volunteers. Meet at the parking area. BENICIA STATE PARKS ASSOCIATION —  Forrest Deaner Native Plant Botanic Garden
We meet every Saturday from 9:30-11:30am in the Forrest Deaner Native Plant Botanic Garden located at the Benicia State Park Recreation Area for planting, weeding, and tending. Parking is free on Saturday Volunteer Days. Tell the Gate Attendant that you are going into the Park to work at the Garden.

Pumpkin Patch Festival    Saturday,  OCT  18, 2014

BAY AREA ELECTRIC RAILROAD ASSOCIATION —  Western Railway Museum
Gather the family and begin at the Western Railway Museum. The first electric express train leaves at 10:00 AM with departures every half-hour until 4pm. The ride on a historic life-sized electric train takes visitors back in time on a scenic five-mile trip to Gum Grove Station, a wooded glen far from the trappings of modern life. Local Rotarians from the Fairfield-Suisun, Cordelia, and Dixon Rotary Clubs are rallying together to make the event a success, providing a hay bale fort, food, tractor rides, music, games and of course, pumpkins for sale, just in time for Halloween. Admission is $12 for adults, $11 for seniors (65 and up), and $9 for children (ages 2 –14). Prices include admission to the Museum and to the Pumpkin Patch, unlimited train rides, use of the Museum's spacious and shaded picnic grounds, and free parking. Please note that there are no advanced reservations. All proceeds benefit the Western Railway Museum (a nonprofit educational institution) and the local Rotary Clubs who provide thousands of dollars to local community and youth activities each year.

Horse Day at McIntyre Ranch   Saturday,  OCT  18, 2014

GVRD —  McIntyre Ranch
For ages 8-17 -- Learn about the friendly horses and goats, and participate in their daily care. Wear sturdy work clothes and tough shoes because this is a "hand-on" experience. You will put a halter on a horse, learn to lead horses safely, brush them, clean their feet and clean their stalls. Everyone will have a chance to sit on a horse (helmet are required and provided, keep hairstyle simple for easy fit). Kids will receive a souvenit t-shirt! Eat a good breakfast, bring water bottle and wear layers. For more information contact the Coordinator at 648-4552.

Pumpkin Decorating   Saturday,  OCT  18, 2014

SOLANO LAND TRUST AND RUSH RANCH EDUCATIONAL COUNCIL —  Rush Ranch
Whether you're a kid or a "kid at heart", come experience the fun of decorating pumpkins in the outdoors at Rush Ranch. Be inspired by the plants and animals that surround you, as well as by Halloween themes.All ages welcome. Parents please directly supervise children age 5 and under. Small pumpkins and craft supplies will be provided. In the craft area there may be other items that you can make as well. Some pumpkins will be artificial so you can use them as Halloween decorations year after year. Other pumpkins will be freshly picked from local fields. In addition to pumpkin decorating for all ages, pumpkin carving may be available for kids ages 10 and up. Wear clothes that you don't mind messing up because we will be using craft paint, craft glue and other messy stuff. Feel free to bring additional craft supplies or pumpkins. Rain will cancel this event. Call Linda (707-759-4676) if the weather is uncertain. RSVP online or by calling Linda at 707-759-4676 so we can bring the correct number of pumpkins. If you have not made reservations, pumpkins will be provided on a first come, first served basis.

Rush Ranch 'Get the Rush'   Saturday,  OCT  18, 2014

SOLANO LAND TRUST AND RUSH RANCH EDUCATIONAL COUNCIL —  Rush Ranch
Get the Rush is a series of fun and free activities for the whole family, offered on the third Saturday of every month at Rush Ranch. All ages and mobility levels are welcome! This event is 100% volunteer-run and activities vary month-to-month. Volunteer-run activities may include a guided walk alongside tidal marsh and through upland grasses (timing varies), a traditional blacksmith shop in action (10am-1pm), an interpretive display of Native American tools and decorations (10am-1pm), and horse-drawn wagon rides that are wheelchair accessible (11am-1pm). BRING: Water, snacks or picnic lunch, bug repellent. Be prepared for variable weather by bringing layered clothes, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and protection from sun, wind, fog, and rain. SUISUN MARSH NATURAL HISTORY ASSOCIATION —  Suisun Wildlife Center
Suisun Wildlife Center presents the annual Halloween Howl, where the critters slither, creep, screech, hoot and hoooooooowl! Kids can come get a free trick or tweet bag, hear storyteller's haunted tales, or walk the wild creatures spooky trail - if they dare! Meet bats, spiders, snakes and owls, adopt a pumpkin, make a jack-o-lantern, play games, or get your face painted! A perfect family activity, particularly for younger children!
