Nature Hike at King-Swett Ranches   Saturday,  MAR  7, 2020
9:00 AM

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  King-Swett Ranches
Come explore the hills between Fairfield, Benicia, and Vallejo! You'll be led by expert Solano Land Trust guides who know this area—known as the King-Swett Ranches—inside out. They'll share insights about the wildlife and spring flowers in this area, and give you a great workout! Take advantage of this special opportunity if you can because the King-Swett Ranches are otherwise closed. Bring: a backpack with plenty of water and snacks, boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with tread for rugged, steep, and slippery off-trail terrain, long, sturdy pants and layered clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, protection from the elements (sun, wind, fog, rain). Recommended: binoculars, camera, bug repellent, hiking sticks, gaiters. Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be prepared: a strenuous pace hiking up to 6 miles off-trail, up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and thistle. The King-Swett Ranches are working ranches—cattle are free range so they roam as they please. Sorry, no dogs allowed. Space is limited and registration is recommended. For more information or to register, visit us online.

Bird of Prey Workshop and Hike   Saturday,  MAR  7, 2020
10:00 AM

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  Rush Ranch
Learn about eagles, hawks and falcons – the ways they fly, what they eat, where they hunt and rest, and why they migrate long distances or stay in one place all year. In the workshop (up to two hours), Larry Broderick covers birds of prey identification methods, natural history and threats, and the importance of habitat protection and restoration. Participants learn how to identify differences between species, distinctions across individuals within one species, and changes over time during one individual’s life. A hike (up to 1.5 miles) after the workshop gives the group an opportunity to practice spotting eagles, falcons and hawks in the hills and above the marsh. Registration is Recommended online. Space is limited. Solano Land Trust will provide binoculars. A chili lunch will be provided for registered participants. We encourage everyone to support and donate towards The Suisun Wildlife Center even if they are not interested in the hike or workshop. In lieu of the $10 fee, donations will be accepted for The Suisun Wildlife Center. Find a list of items HERE.

Peña Adobe Open House   Saturday,  MAR  7, 2020
11:00 AM

PEÑA ADOBE HISTORICAL SOCIETY —  Peña Adobe Park
The Descendants Chapter of the Old Spanish Trail Association, in partnership with the Peña Adobe Historical Society, will present “The Old Spanish Trail: Tales of its Northern California Travelers.” The Old Spanish Trail Association was formed in 1994 by historian Ron Kessler to preserve, protect, and promote the Old Spanish National Historic Trail. Join us at our Open House from 11am-2pm at the Peña Adobe, and learn about the historic route that allowed local pioneers to settle in Vacaville. The Old Spanish Trail has been called one of the most difficult trails in the United States. Originally a Native American route, it was used by adventurous pioneers who did not use wagons but traveled the old pack trail by mule, horse or by foot from the Midwest to Los Angeles beginning in the early 1800s. John Fremont, Kit Carson, Antonio Armijo and George Yount all traveled to California via the Old Spanish Trail.
Location:

DIRECTIONS: Peña Adobe Road just off of Interstate 80 to the left of the Lagoon Valley Park entrance.
