Come be a part of cleaning up Solano County's coastlines and creeks! Make our waterways beautiful and healthy for wildlife. There will be clean-up locations in your city and local parks throughout Solano County. Please see our website for a location near you. Advanced sign-ups are requested so coordinators can have enough clean-up supplies on-hand for you and your group.

Rockville Hills Regional Park Trail Crew   Saturday,  SEP  17, 2016

CITY OF FAIRFIELD —  Rockville Hills Regional Park
The Rockville Trail Crew volunteer work days are scheduled for the third Saturday of every month from 9-12noon, rain or shine! Trail Crew volunteers provide technical assistance with trail maintenance and construction activities on the trails. Trail Crew volunteer duties consist of clearing rocks, trees, brush and other debris from proposed trail routes; build/repair walk ways, bridges or other structures; grade/fill existing trail paths to ensure user safety; and attend all required meetings and training sessions. Volunteers should bring water, gloves and a tool if available. Volunteers should wear layered clothing and sturdy shoes. A snack and beverage provided for volunteers. Meet at the parking area. Rush Ranch Bird Walk & Habitat Workshop   Saturday,  SEP  17, 2016

NAPA - SOLANO AUBUBON SOCIETY —  Rush Ranch
A Workshop aimed at beginning birders will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by a Bird Walk at 9:30 a.m. until noon at Rush Ranch Open Space and Grizzly Island Wildlife Area. What are the elements that create a wildlife habitat? We will explore the 5 different habitats that the wetlands provide, and explore how each one supports different birds. Walks are appropriate for all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). This walk requires some hiking up hills. Please bring binoculars if you have them and water. Soul Food Farm in partnership with Heirloom Tomato Maze welcomes you to walk through the garden maze made with almost 370 bales of hay and taste more than 200 heirloom tomato varieties. Enjoy guided maze tours, tomato and veggie tasting, special cooking demonstrations, gardening workshops, and more at Hay Bale Garden's very first Tomato Maze! The maze will be open Friday-Sundays, from 9am until 5pm. Suggested donation is $5.

BENICIA STATE PARKS ASSOCIATION —  Forrest Deaner Native Plant Botanic Garden
We meet every Saturday from 9:30-11:30am in the Forrest Deaner Native Plant Botanic Garden located at the Benicia State Park Recreation Area for planting, weeding, and tending. Parking is free on Saturday Volunteer Days. Tell the Gate Attendant that you are going into the Park to work at the Garden.

Horse Day at McIntyre Ranch   Saturday,  SEP  17, 2016

GVRD —  McIntyre Ranch
For ages 8-17 -- Learn about the friendly horses and goats, and participate in their daily care. Wear sturdy work clothes and tough shoes because this is a "hand-on" experience. You will put a halter on a horse, learn to lead horses safely, brush them, clean their feet and clean their stalls. Everyone will have a chance to sit on a horse (helmet are required and provided, keep hairstyle simple for easy fit). Eat a good breakfast, bring water bottle and wear layers. For more information contact the Coordinator at 648-4552. Cost: $25/class resident, $30/class non-resident. Registration is also available online, click on 'Outdoors'.

DIRECTIONS: McIntyre Ranch, located at the very end of St. John’s Mine Road, across from the Solano Community College Vallejo Center at 545 Columbus Parkway. Take St. John’s Mine Road and cross over the cattle crossing. Continue up the road and stay to the right to follow the road down to the barn. You are authorized to drive through this road for GVRD programs only.

 
Nature and History Walk   Saturday,  SEP  17, 2016

PUTAH CREEK COUNCIL & SOLANO COUNTY PARKS —  Lake Solano County Park
Walk back through the mists of time to learn about the Patwin Indians, the Berryessa brothers, and John Wolfskill’s impact on the region. Discover how Putah Creek was transformed into Lake Solano, bringing water to farmers and residents of Solano County. Learn about the native trees and plants, and some of their medicinal secrets, passed down through the generations by Native Americans. Look for great blue herons, snowy egrets, peacocks or other wildlife on the tour. Your guides will also show you what the resident beavers have been up to! Meet at 10am in front of the Nature Center, at the west entrance of the Park. The presentation is free, and parking is only $6 per vehicle, payable at the east entrance of the Park, on the other side of Pleasants Valley Road. No RSVP is necessary. Be prepared for variable weather and trail conditions by bringing water, wearing sturdy closed-toe shoes, and dressing in layers. A camera, binoculars and snacks are also recommended.

Visions of the Wild 2016   Saturday,  SEP  17, 2016

VISIONS OF THE WILD 2016 — 
The third annual Visions of the Wild festival, with its newest theme, "Wild in the City," will take place from Sept. 15 through Sept. 18. The festival is a celebration of the plants and animals that live in our urban and suburban settings. Events will include film screenings, field trips, art exhibits, guest speakers and cruises, all taking place in Vallejo and American Canyon. The festival connects nature, culture and community, and is designed to bring together artists, conservationists, students and teachers. All events, with the exception of the river cruises, are free to the public. It is a fun and interactive long weekend with activities for all ages.
