BAY AREA RIDGE TRAIL COUNCIL —  Rockville Trails Preserve
The New Year is a powerful symbol in our lives—a time of reflection, promise, and renewal. Dedicate the first day of January to your health and well-being by joining us on this winter's day hike. Sweeping views of Suisun and Green Valleys from the hilltops will recharge your spirit! Enjoy Rockville Trails Preserve on this hike with docent Cathy. The hike will be a moderate to strenuous pace hiking 4 to 6 miles up and down slippery, steep, and rugged hills that may be full of sticky seeds and thorny plants. The terrain at Rockville Trails Preserve is difficult. All ages are welcome, but those with health, breathing, or balance issues should consider an easier hike. Participants on this hike must be prepared for the following: A moderate to strenuous pace hiking 4 to 6 miles up and down slippery, steep, and rugged hills that may be full of sticky seeds and thorny plants. 7th Annual Mare Island Aglow Holiday Lighted Trail Walk   Sunday,  JAN  1, 2017

Solano RCD is hosting volunteer events to plant native plants in Vacaville this winter. We will be working from 9A-noon in Centennial Park in north Vacaville and will be planting native trees, shrubs, wildflowers and grasses. This is our second year of restoration work at Centennial Park, and it is really being transformed! We will provide all necessary tools, work gloves, and snacks. All of these events are family friendly, but we do ask that children under the age of 14 work closely with an adult. Please RSVP by email if you are interested in participating.

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  King-Swett Ranches
Come explore the hills between Fairfield, Benicia, and Vallejo! You'll be led by expert Solano Land Trust guides who know this area—known as the King-Swett Ranches—inside out. They'll share insights about the birds and other wildlife that call this area home, and give you a great workout! Take advantage of this special opportunity if you can because the King-Swett Ranches are otherwise closed. Bring: a backpack with plenty of water and snacks, boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with tread for rugged, steep, and slippery off-trail terrain, long, sturdy pants and layered clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, protection from the elements (sun, wind, fog, rain). Recommended: binoculars, camera, bug repellent, hiking sticks, gaiters. Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be prepared: a strenuous pace hiking up to 6 miles off-trail, up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and thistle. PUTAH CREEK COUNCIL & SOLANO COUNTY PARKS —  Lake Solano County Park
Join Lake Solano Rangers and Docents for a free, guided nature walk, “Winter Birds at Lake Solano,” at Lake Solano Park from 10 AM to noon. Meet at the Lake Solano Nature Center to begin your walk along the Shoreline Trail with your expert guide, Bob Rockwell. California enjoys mild winters, and that makes it an ideal spot for many migratory birds to spend the cooler months. At Lake Solano, a wide array of habitats means that visitors can observe a diverse assortment of birds and other wildlife. On this tour, we'll observe year-round residents and migratory visitors while taking in the natural beauty of Lake Solano Park. Loaner binoculars will be available. This event is a great opportunity to explore a local park that has much to offer: boating, picnic areas, wildlife viewing, and multiple hiking trails. Enjoy a day of strolling along Putah Creek while learning about local ecology and appreciating the beauty of this region. These activities are appropriate for all ages, and families and groups are welcome. Please prepare for the weather and variable conditions by bringing water, wearing sturdy shoes, and dressing in layers. The tour will be rescheduled in the event of heavy rain. SAN FRANCISCO BAY NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE & SOLANO LAND TRUST —  Rush Ranch
Come to Rush Ranch to learn about science while walking near the edge of a wild wetland. Join scientist and educator Sarah Ferner from San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve for a guided walk near the edge of Suisun Marsh during one of the highest high tides of the year – a King Tide. Nature should put on a quietly beautiful show as the rising tide slowly floods the marsh. We will learn about Rush Ranch’s marshes, scientific research occurring there, and what King Tides can teach us about sea level rise. Bring your camera to participate in California King Tide Initiative’s citizen science photo monitoring. Space is limited; pre-register online to save a spot. This event is primarily for adults, though interested young people are welcome. Please dress appropriately for winter weather, including walking on trails that will likely be wet or muddy and standing still in windy conditions. In order to protect wildlife, cattle, and rare plants—and for your pet's safety—dogs are not allowed on these trails. SOLANO LAND TRUST —  Lynch Canyon Open Space Park
Help us take care of Lynch Canyon's 1,000 plus acres. Projects include improving trails, fixing fences, weeding, and the like. This is physical outdoor work. There is usually no shade. Be prepared to be outdoors for approximately three hours using hand tools like shovels and hoes; lifting, carrying and lowering supplies; bending over, squatting and kneeling on dirt, grasses and weeds; and sweating. Ages 12 and up who are comfortable with this type of physical work are welcome—under 18 must be accompanied by an adult and must have a liability waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. When you arrive, ask the leader for a free parking pass. If you pre-register, tools and free lunch are provided. The Rockville Trail Crew volunteer work days are scheduled for the third Saturday of every month from 9-12noon, rain or shine! Trail Crew volunteers provide technical assistance with trail maintenance and construction activities on the trails. Trail Crew volunteer duties consist of clearing rocks, trees, brush and other debris from proposed trail routes; build/repair walk ways, bridges or other structures; grade/fill existing trail paths to ensure user safety; and attend all required meetings and training sessions. For ages 8-17 -- Learn about the friendly horses and goats, and participate in their daily care. Wear sturdy work clothes and tough shoes because this is a "hand-on" experience. You will put a halter on a horse, learn to lead horses safely, brush them, clean their feet and clean their stalls. Everyone will have a chance to sit on a horse (helmet are required and provided, keep hairstyle simple for easy fit). Eat a good breakfast, bring water bottle and wear layers. Eagles, Hawks & other Birds of Prey Hike   Saturday,  JAN  21, 2017

Join Larry Broderick and team for a hiking tour featuring resident, migrating and over-wintering birds of prey. Broderick is a gifted and entertaining teacher who brings over 25 years of experience researching, rescuing and rehabilitating raptors. Learn about these majestic birds, including where they go, what they do, and how to distinguish different species based on their looks, behaviors, and the ways they fly. COST: $10 per person (payable when registering). All proceeds help Solano Land Trust protect land to ensure a healthy environment, keep ranching and farming families on their properties, and inspire a love of the land. Space is limited. Pre-registration and pre-payment preferred online. The presentation will take place indoors from 1pm to approximately 3pm. Following a brief social break and time for a snack, Larry will lead a short but steep hike up Suisun Hill where participants may observe eagles, falcons and hawks and test their new identification skills. Hey Flockers! After a very long hiatus we are happy to announce our first bird walk in over two years. There are lots of exciting species to be discovered this time of year so we're heading out to Peña Adobe Park for some good old fashioned birding. Bring your favorite brew, or wine, or non-alcoholic beverage which we'll enjoy after the walk. It is highly recommended that everyone bring plenty of water and a light snack. See you there! Explore Lynch Canyon's rolling hills with stands of native oak, buckeye and bay trees, riparian corridors, and a great pond. Admire wintering ducks, grebes and possible shorebirds. Other wintering and resident birds may include golden eagles, harriers, hawks, kites, woodpeckers, Hermit Thrush and quail. If time allows, the group may also go for a guided hike at the King-Swett Ranches. Brought to you by the Sacramento Audubon Society. WHAT TO BE PREPARED FOR: Hiking about two miles over rough, rocky, uneven ground. This is a working ranch where free-range cattle roam as they please. There is no drinking water. There is one outhouse, located in the parking lot. In order to protect wildlife, cattle, and rare plants—and for your pet's safety—dogs are not allowed. SOLANO LAND TRUST —  Lynch Canyon Open Space Park
Guided by her love of the outdoors and passion for yoga, Barbara Fredricks of Benicia Yoga and Wellness is offering a yoga hike at Lynch Canyon that is free and open to everyone. Parking is $6 (cash or check), or an annual parking pass can be purchased; call 707-784-6765 for details. All proceeds help Solano County Parks keep this land open and safe. WHAT TO BE PREPARED FOR: The pace will be moderate and the yoga practice suitable to all. No experience necessary. Expect rough, rocky, uneven ground. This is a working ranch where free-range cattle roam as they please. There is no drinking water. There is one outhouse, located in the parking lot. In order to protect wildlife, cattle, and rare plants—and for your pet's safety—dogs are not allowed. Maintain a safe distance from cattle and wildlife, and be aware that this is tick, mountain lion, poison oak, and potentially rattlesnake country. Wear comfortable clothes, sneakers or boots, and bring a pack for your own water bottle. No mat or other yoga equipment necessary. Meet in the park parking lot. Rain cancels.
