Guided Canoe Trip on Lake Solano

8:00 AM SOLANO COUNTY PARKS — Lake Solano Make a splash and join a guided canoe program at Lake Solano Park. Discover the wonders of Putah Creek on this adventure. You’ll have the opportunity to relax, explore, learn, and enjoy the arrival of spring. To ensure a friendly, personal experience, the guided trip is limited to just 20 guests in up to 7 park-owned canoes. Children age 8 and older are welcome if accompanied by an adult. The volunteers will give you basic safety and paddling instructions before you begin. Then you’ll learn about life along the river. You may observe Great blue herons, egrets, cormorants, ducks, geese, or perhaps a shy muskrat or river otter. Participants may want to bring water, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and paddling gloves. You will probably get wet, so a change of clothes is recommended upon your return to land. For those who want to take pictures, a dry bag (double ziplock bags work well) or water tight container is suggested to keep your camera dry. Reservations are required. Reserve your spot online. 9:00 AM SOLANO LAND TRUST — King-Swett Ranches Come explore the hills between Fairfield, Benicia, and Vallejo! You'll be led by Jim Walsh and/or James Chang, both expert Solano Land Trust guides who know this area—known as the King-Swett Ranches—inside out. They'll share insights about the birds and other wildlife that call this area home, and give you a great workout! Take advantage of this special opportunity if you can because the King-Swett Ranches are otherwise closed. Bring: a backpack with plenty of water and snacks, boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with tread for rugged, steep, and slippery off-trail terrain, long, sturdy pants and layered clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, protection from the elements (sun, wind, fog, rain). Recommended: binoculars, camera, bug repellent, hiking sticks, gaiters. Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be prepared: a strenuous pace hiking 4-6 miles off-trail, up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and thistle. Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day celebrates the life of Jack Doub, an avid teenage mountain biker from North Carolina who had a true passion for the sport from an early age but passed away in 2002. 8:30 AM SOLANO LAND TRUST — Rockville Trails Join docents Richard and Cathy Christo for a quick-paced hike through the oaks and grassland with some hill climbs. We'll take a few short breaks to enjoy the views and catch our breath. Enjoy this beautiful open space while getting in shape! Take advantage of this special opportunity if you can because Solano Land Trust's Rockville Trails Preserve is otherwise closed. Arrive on time and be prepared to immediately carpool or caravan from the meeting place to the trailhead. Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be prepared for a quick pace hiking 4-5 miles up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and thistle. All trails are unimproved—expect rough, rocky, uneven ground. Some travel may be off-trail. The preserve is a working ranch where free-range cattle roam as they please. Visitors must be accompanied by a docent at all times. Since the preserve is otherwise closed, the entry and exit gate will be locked except for the start and end times of the hike. There is no drinking water or bathrooms. Dogs are not allowed. We recommend bringing a backpack with plenty of water, snacks and those leftovers for lunch. Trail Crew volunteers provide technical assistance with trail maintenance and construction activities on the trails. Trail Crew volunteer duties consist of clearing rocks, trees, brush and other debris from proposed trail routes; build/repair walk ways, bridges or other structures; grade/fill existing trail paths to ensure user safety; and attend all required meetings and training sessions. Be inspired by the plants and animals that surround you, as well as by Halloween themes.All ages welcome. Parents please directly supervise children age 5 and under. Small pumpkins and craft supplies will be provided. In the craft area there may be other items that you can make as well. Some pumpkins will be artificial so you can use them as Halloween decorations year after year. Other pumpkins will be freshly picked from local fields. In addition to pumpkin decorating for all ages, pumpkin carving may be available for kids ages 10 and up. Wear clothes that you don't mind messing up because we will be using craft paint, craft glue and other messy stuff. Feel free to bring additional craft supplies or pumpkins. Birds of Prey Identification Workshop and Hike

10:00 AM SOLANO LAND TRUST — Lynch Canyon Open Space Park Join Larry Broderick and the Solano Land Trust Raptor Team for a birds of prey hike. The hike will offer identification tips and views of resident and migrating birds of prey. Previous sightings include golden eagles, bald eagles, rough-legged hawks, Cooper's hawks, sharp-shinned hawks, ferruginous hawks, peregrine falcons, prairie falcons and other, more common birds of prey. This is the Land Trust’s eighth season offering raptor tours and workshops on its properties. Cost is $10 per person (payable when registering) plus $5 per vehicle (payable at the park). Advance registration is required. You can register online. All ages are welcome, but participants should be prepared for a moderate pace covering about 4 miles, possibly off-trail in places, up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants and thistle, and passing free range cattle along the way. Meet at the Lynch Canyon parking lot before 10 a.m. Bring $5 cash for parking; a backpack with plenty of water and snacks; boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with tread for rough, steep and slippery terrain; long, sturdy pants and layered clothes that you don't mind getting dirty; and protection from sun, wind and fog. Binoculars, a camera, bug repellent and hiking sticks are also recommended. Heavy rain or high fire danger cancels the hike. Call Mary Beth at (707) 685-5908 if the weather is uncertain. 7:00 PM RUSH RANCH EDUCATIONAL COUNCIL AND SOLANO LAND TRUST — Rush Ranch CURIOUS ABOUT CONSTELLATIONS? PONDERING THE PLANETS? If so, then don’t miss a Rush Ranch stargazing event led by local astronomy enthusiast, Jim Jerrell, who will share his 30+ years of celestial knowledge. The evening begins at 7:00 pm with a short presentation in the Rush Ranch Nature Center. Outdoor viewing begins when darkness falls. Telescopes will be on hand. Personal scopes & binoculars are welcome, but be familiar with their setup and use. Mosquito repellant and warm clothing are a must. Children are welcome, but must remain supervised at all times. 9:00 AM SOLANO LAND TRUST — Lynch Canyon Open Space Park Spend an autumn morning hiking the beautiful hills at Lynch Canyon Open Space Park, enjoying the trees, the birds, and the views of the bay. Use all your senses to appreciate this local treasure. All ages are welcome, but participants should be prepared for a 4 to 6 mile hike on rough, rocky, uneven ground. The group will travel at a moderate pace with occasional stops. The route includes rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds and thorny plants. Maintain a safe distance from the free-range cattle and wildlife, and be aware that this is tick, mountain lion, and potentially rattlesnake country. In order to protect wildlife, cattle, and rare plants—and for your pet's safety—dogs are not allowed. Bring and a backpack with plenty of water and snacks. Wear boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes that grip well. Long, sturdy pants are recommended, along with layered clothes, and protection from sun, wind and fog. You may also want to bring hiking sticks, bug repellent, binoculars, and a camera. Meet Jim in the Lynch Canyon parking lot. RSVPs are appreciated to Jim Hanser at 707-372-6090 or by email. The first electric express train leaves at 10:00 AM with departures every half-hour until 4pm. The ride on a historic life-sized electric train takes visitors back in time on a scenic five-mile trip to Gum Grove Station, a wooded glen far from the trappings of modern life. Local Rotarians from the Fairfield-Suisun, Cordelia, and Dixon Rotary Clubs are rallying together to make the event a success, providing a hay bale fort, food, tractor rides, music, games and of course, pumpkins for sale, just in time for Halloween. Admission is $12 for adults, $11 for seniors (65 and up), and $9 for children (ages 2 –14). Prices include admission to the Museum and to the Pumpkin Patch, unlimited train rides, use of the Museum's spacious and shaded picnic grounds, and free parking. Please note that there are no advanced reservations. All proceeds benefit the Western Railway Museum (a nonprofit educational institution) and the local Rotary Clubs who provide thousands of dollars to local community and youth activities each year. Beware of the big bad wolf, evil witches, and other wicked creatures of the night. The Haunted Hike is ONLY for hikers 5-years-old and up. Cost is $6 per hiker.
