Pre-CBC Benicia Field Trip   Saturday,  DEC  12, 2020
9:00 AM

NAPA SOLANO AUDUBON —  Lynch Canyon Open Space Park
Robin Leong will lead a Pre-CBC Field Trip to Lynch Canyon to scope out the birds for Monday, December 14th's Benicia CBC. This trip will help train participants in learning the ropes of a CBC including how to estimate bird populations and how to record species for a CBC. We are likely to find a variety of raptors including Golden Eagles, Red-tailed and Red-Shouldered Hawks, White-tailed Kites, accipiters like Cooper's or Sharp-shinned Hawks, and possibly a Rough-legged or Ferruginous Hawk as well. Lynch Canyon is home to grassland birds such as the Western Bluebird, Say's and Black Phoebes, and Western Meadowlarks along with a variety of overwintering sparrows. With luck we will also observe Rufous-crowned Sparrows that breed along the canyon slopes. The walk begins along a riparian corridor where Hermit Thrushes, Chestnut-backed Chickadees, and even Townsend's Warblers are often seen. Bring water, and a snack or lunch as the walk will likely continue until 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Lynch Canyon is a fee area and may require a fee of $6.00 per vehicle.

For more information, contact Robin Leong.

All NSAS Field Trips will follow strict Covid protocols including Social Distancing, the wearing of masks at all times, a limit of 15 participants, and no carpooling. For this trip, we will break into smaller groups in the event more than 15 people attend. Field Trips will be taken at the participant's own risk and a Release of Liability Form with a signature according to National Audubon Recommendations is required before participation.

Robin Leong is our long-time coordinator who helps our 75-100 participants cover our 15-mile circle. Our circle area includes the communities of Benicia, East Vallejo, Cordelia, and West Suisun City as well as parts of Grizzly Island and Grizzly Bay. We typically observe 160 - 175 species and since it's inception we have recorded 233 species. We even sometimes lead the nation in the number of Black Rails and Virginia Rails counted!
