SOLANO LAND TRUST & SOLANO COUNTY PARKS —  Lynch Canyon Open Space Park
Solano Land Trust and Solano County Parks are proud to present this popular series of birds of prey hikes of the winter migration season. Lynch Canyon is home to golden eagles and hawks. It is also a magnet for migrating and over-wintering birds of prey. It provides them with over 1,000 undeveloped acres where they can hunt and rest. Some feathered visitors come from as far away as the Arctic Circle. This hike will be between 4-6 miles. Meet in the parking lot. Space is limited. $10 per person. Pre-registration required online. **NOTE: There is a separate parking fee of $6 at Lynch Canyon, cash or check, payable to Solano County Parks.

PEÑA ADOBE HISTORICAL SOCIETY —  Peña Adobe Park
Join the Peña Adobe Historical Society in welcoming this month's guests, Cecelia Peña and Armando Perez to the Peña Adobe Monthly Open House, Saturday, March 2, 11:00am – 2:00pm. Cecelia Peña represents the fifth generation of Vacaville pioneer Juan Felipe Peña. In 1933, Cecelia’s grandfather, Vidal Peña, grandson of Juan Felipe Peña, still owned about 55 acres of the original 1842 Vaca-Peña Land Grant. Cecelia will share stories, and photographs, and chat with visitors about her remarkable family, headed by Cecelia's great great grandfather, Juan Felipe Peña the namesake of the Peña Adobe Park. Cecelia will be joined by Armando Perez, of Vacaville, who is of Apache descent. Perez’s grandfather was a shaman, a healer who taught of Mother Earth's healing powers. Dressed in traditional mission whites, with leather leggings and head covering, Armando will speak of Native American history and share artifacts with park visitors. SOLANO LAND TRUST —  Lynch Canyon Open Space Park
Help us take care of Lynch Canyon's 1,000 plus acres. Projects include improving trails, fixing fences, weeding, and the like. This is physical outdoor work. There is usually no shade. Be prepared to be outdoors for approximately three hours using hand tools like shovels and hoes; lifting, carrying and lowering supplies; bending over, squatting and kneeling on dirt, grasses and weeds; and sweating. Ages 12 and up who are comfortable with this type of physical work are welcome—under 18 must be accompanied by an adult and must have a liability waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. When you arrive, ask the leader for a free parking pass. No registration required. Just show up and be ready to work at 9am! WHAT TO BRING: a backpack with plenty of water and snacks, heavy work gloves, eye protection (e.g., sunglasses), boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with tread for rough, steep, and slippery terrain, long, sturdy pants and layered clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, protection from sun, wind, fog. Dry and dormant most of the year, the prairie is transformed by winter rains into a tapestry of stunning colors, and its vernal pools host a rich diversity of rare aquatic life. Visitors can enjoy an easy guided walk which may include portions of the Preserve that are only accessible with a Jepson Prairie docent. Participants can learn about vernal pools and see the aquatic invertebrate and flowering plants that depend on them. Volunteer docents offer these two-hour tours every Saturday and Sunday starting at 10 a.m., March 10 through May 13 (Mother’s Day). For groups of 6 or more, RSVP to Kate Mawdsley at email or 530-758-5093. A minimum $5 donation is encouraged to attend this tour.

Historic Mare Island Navy Cemetery Tour   Saturday,  MAR  9, 2019

MARE ISLAND HERITAGE TRUST —  Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve
The cemetery on Mare Island is the Navy's oldest cemetery in the West, with graves there dating back to the 1850's. Park at the Visitor's Center and meet at the cemetery, just a few hundred feet up the trail. We will be offering two tours, one starting at 12pm, and the other at 1pm. Realistically, 40 people is the maximum number at this time for each tour. If there are more than 40 people that arrive BY NOON for the first tour, we will ask folks who arrive after that to join us for the 2nd tour at 1pm. We hope you understand, and we will try to accommodate everyone. And if more people show up, we will add another tour, starting at 2pm. We hope this will be a monthly event on second Saturdays. Please give us a call at 707-241-4285 if you have any questions about the tours. The event is free, but your donations to the Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve are always encouraged, and help keep the park going!

The Rockville Trail Crew volunteer work days are scheduled for the third Saturday of every month from 9-12noon, rain or shine! Trail Crew volunteers provide technical assistance with trail maintenance and construction activities on the trails. Trail Crew volunteer duties consist of clearing rocks, trees, brush and other debris from proposed trail routes; build/repair walk ways, bridges or other structures; grade/fill existing trail paths to ensure user safety; and attend all required meetings and training sessions. Volunteers should bring water, gloves and a tool if available. Volunteers should wear layered clothing and sturdy shoes. A snack and beverage provided for volunteers. Meet at the parking area. For ages 8-17 -- Learn about the friendly horses and goats, and participate in their daily care. Wear sturdy work clothes and tough shoes because this is a "hand-on" experience. You will put a halter on a horse, learn to lead horses safely, brush them, clean their feet and clean their stalls. Everyone will have a chance to sit on a horse (helmet are required and provided, keep hairstyle simple for easy fit). Eat a good breakfast, bring water bottle and wear layers. PUTAH CREEK COUNCIL —  Lake Solano
In honor of St. Patrick's Day, let's explore the green things in Lake Solano! There are multiple species of leafy green plants that live in the lake, Green Herons … what else will we find? Join us to find out! This tour will run from 12:45 PM - 3:00 PM and will be led by volunteer docent Linda Allison. Discover the wonders of Putah Creek through exploration, relaxation, and education. The tour is an opportunity to learn about life along the river and the special riparian forest that grows along its banks. The guided trip is limited to 14 guests. Children age 8 and older are welcome if accompanied by an adult. There will be a basic safety and paddling discussion before beginning. Canoes, paddles, and lifejackets will be provided free of charge. Participants may want to bring water, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. You may get wet, so a change of clothes is recommended! Enjoy the first hike of Spring with Solano Land Trust! Explore the hills between Suisun Valley and Green Valley, and see sweeping views of Solano County and beyond. Enjoying the vistas of Solano County and searching for wildflowers. Moderate to Strenuous, 4-6 miles, rain cancels, 9am-1pm. There will be sweeping views of Solano County and beyond. Residents and visitors are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity for a docent-led hike because Rockville Trails Preserve is otherwise closed. Up to 5 miles. TULEYOME —  Stebbins Cold Canyon
RESCHEDULED! Would you like to enrich your field notebooks and develop a deeper connection with the world around you? Join local natural science illustrator Robin Carlson on a hike in Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve to learn the basics of field sketching. Through demonstrations, exercises, individual exploration and discussion, we will enjoy the reserve and practice taking our nature observations to a deeper level. All you need is a pencil and sketchbook, although please feel free to bring any other drawing implements that you enjoy using. Please also bring snacks, lunch and water. This favorite hiking spot is in constant need of restoration due to the high number of visitors. Come help Keep this great spot safe and enjoyable! Please bring snacks, lunch, WATER, and work gloves – Tuleyome will provide needed tools. Dress for the weather and getting dirty! We will meet 8:00 AM at the Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve parking lot. Dry and dormant most of the year, the prairie is transformed by winter rains into a tapestry of stunning colors, and its vernal pools host a rich diversity of rare aquatic life. Visitors can enjoy an easy guided walk which may include portions of the Preserve that are only accessible with a Jepson Prairie docent. Participants can learn about vernal pools and see the aquatic invertebrate and flowering plants that depend on them. Volunteer docents offer these two-hour tours every Saturday and Sunday starting at 10 a.m., March 10 through May 13 (Mother’s Day). Come join the next kids’ hike at Lynch Canyon Open Space Park, hosted by Solano Land Trust, for some fresh air, exercise, and fun! During this hike, participants will observe resident, migrating, and over- wintering birds in the area. Meet in the parking lot at 9:45 for a 10:00 departure. Free. One of the unique aspects of Suisun Valley’s BackRoad Vines is their BOCCE COURTS! The Bocce Ball courts are open to the public during regular tasting hours. The winery also hosts a bocce league!
