The Monticello Weeknight ride is back! This year we will be meeting on Thursday nights through mid-September. Meet at Orchard Elementary School in time to roll out at 6:00P. Pace will be intermediate/Tempo average speed will be 17-20 MPH. We will ride the usual Winters loop or switch up as the group dictates. Will regroup at Putah Creek Road and at Allendale. Our focus will be on a fun, safe ride for all riders.

California Traditional Hunter Education   Saturday,  SEP  7, 2019

CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH & WILDLIFE —  Hastings Island Hunting Preserve
This is a 2-day class on Saturday, Sep 7, and Sunday, Sep 8. In order to be certified the student must attend the entire class including all sessions. Class starts 8:00 AM Sharp, both days. All students are required to obtain a California Get Outdoors ID (GO ID) prior to registering for California Hunter Education courses. If you have previously held a CDFW license (i.e. Fishing), your GO ID is printed on the license above your name. Students will need to show safe handling of firearms and pass the Hunter Education test with a score of 80% or better. There is no minimum age to attend California Hunter Education. Parents or guardians are encouraged to attend with young students, especially those younger than age 16, to help define new words or provide additional tutoring during and after class. For details and instructions for registering, click HERE. Course fee is $10. Student manuals are provided. Bring a pencil/pen/highlighters. Hamburger-fries-onion rings for lunch will be available for purchase from the grill each day.

SUISUN MARSH NATURAL HISTORY ASSOCIATION —  Peytonia Ecological Reserve
As the seasons change in the Suisun Marsh, it cycles through many different conditions. And all year it is alive with the many resident birds and plants. Now is a good time to take a trek through Peytonia Ecological Reserve in Suisun and learn more about the flora and fauna of these unique wetlands. The Suisun Marsh Natural History Association has scheduled a 1-1/2 hour guided walk through the reserve on Saturday. The walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will highlight the current and past uses of plants growing there as well as the natural history of resident birds and animals. Binoculars and walking shoes are recommended. This walk is likely to fill early, so enroll today! For more information or to register, call the Wildlife Center at: (707) 429-4295. This event is free to members and $5.00 for non-members. All proceeds assist the Suisun Marsh Natural History Association in its Suisun Wildlife Center.

PEÑA ADOBE HISTORICAL SOCIETY & RUSH RANCH EDUCATIONAL COUNCIL —  Peña Adobe Park
The Peña Adobe Historical Society will celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, welcoming “Folklorico Juvenil - Danzantes Unidos de Vacaville” as our special guest. This talented group consists of middle school and high school Vacaville youth who enjoy sharing their culture with the community. Most of the group met in Elementary school where they were first introduced to the beautiful art of traditional Folklorico Dance. There is no charge for admission into the historical park. Also explore the Willis Jepson Memorial Garden, and the Indian Council Grounds. Enjoy horseshoe pits, a multi-purpose field, a small pond, and excellent hiking. Dogs are welcome on leashes. Join us for a hike on the King-Swett Ranches. This Solano Land Trust property is a protected expanse of hills and valleys between the cities of Vallejo, Benicia and Fairfield. This nearly 4000 acre expanse is only open on docent led hikes and includes a section of the Bay Area Ridge Trail. Learn about the wildlife that call this area home and the human history of the Ranches. Jasmine Westbrook, Project Manager for the Solano Land Trust, will join us for the hike to talk about range management, including the use of prescribed fire. Minimum age = 12; no pets allowed.

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  Lynch Canyon Open Space Park
Help us take care of Lynch Canyon's 1,000 plus acres. Projects include improving trails, fixing fences, weeding, and the like. This is physical outdoor work. There is usually no shade. Be prepared to be outdoors for approximately three hours using hand tools like shovels and hoes; lifting, carrying and lowering supplies; bending over, squatting and kneeling on dirt, grasses and weeds; and sweating. Ages 12 and up who are comfortable with this type of physical work are welcome—under 18 must be accompanied by an adult and must have a liability waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. When you arrive, ask the leader for a free parking pass. No registration required. Just show up and be ready to work at 9am! WHAT TO BRING: a backpack with plenty of water and snacks, heavy work gloves, eye protection (e.g., sunglasses), boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with tread for rough, steep, and slippery terrain, long, sturdy pants and layered clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, protection from sun, wind, fog. Historic Mare Island Navy Cemetery Tour   Saturday,  SEP  14, 2019

MARE ISLAND HERITAGE TRUST —  Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve
The cemetery on Mare Island is the Navy's oldest cemetery in the West, with graves there dating back to the 1850's. Park at the Visitor's Center and meet at the cemetery, just a few hundred feet up the trail. We will be offering two tours, one starting at 12pm, and the other at 1pm. Realistically, 40 people is the maximum number at this time for each tour. If there are more than 40 people that arrive BY NOON for the first tour, we will ask folks who arrive after that to join us for the 2nd tour at 1pm. We hope you understand, and we will try to accommodate everyone. And if more people show up, we will add another tour, starting at 2pm. We hope this will be a monthly event on second Saturdays. Please give us a call at 707-241-4285 if you have any questions about the tours. The event is free, but your donations to the Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve are always encouraged, and help keep the park going!

RUSH RANCH EDUCATIONAL COUNCIL —  Rush Ranch
The evening's presentation in the Rush Ranch Nature Center by local Astronomy enthusiast, Jon Pannier. The outdoor viewing will begin at dark. Telescopes will be on hand. Personal scopes & binoculars are welcome, but be familiar with their setup and use and arrive before dark. Mosquito repellant and warm clothing layers are a must. Children are welcome, but must remain supervised at all times. In order to preserve night vision, flashlights should be covered with red cellophane, and all latecomers should dim their headlights. CIRCLE D HORSEMEN’S ASSOCIATION —  Circle D Horsemen Arena
Join us for our annual 2-day Gymkhana event, sponsored by Murillos Mexican Restaurant, Vacaville, CA. We'll run each event at least once, with some being run twice, over two days. There will be a daily high point, along with a two day combined, over-all high point. Get ready for some SPECTACULAR awards and some fast, fast, fast times. Dry camping is always free, however please be sure to bring your own portables. California Coastal Cleanup Day is a volunteer opportunity throughout the state to help remove trash from our creeks, marshes, bays, and ocean. Hill Slough Bridge and Rush Ranch are part of a national system of reserves that protects more than 1.3 million acres of coastal land and water. The Hill Slough/Rush Ranch cleanup location is on Grizzly Island Road in Suisun City, at the first bridge, approximately 1.5 miles off of Highway 12. This is a site where kids should be 10 or older due to potential hazards associated with the tidal marsh. There are no bathroom facilities located here. Please register online.

You can find us at the Alliance cleanup site on the corner of Fairgrounds Drive and Coach Lane, or if you want to clean at a different site in town, email Valcore Recycling and they’ll help you find your spot. Wear closed-toe shoes, sturdy clothes, hat, sunscreen and gloves. Bring a bucket or water bottle if you have them. All participants will need to sign a waiver; volunteers under age 18 will need one signed by their parent/guardian. We’ll have waivers on site, or you can get yours in advance on online. The Rockville Trail Crew volunteer work days are scheduled for the third Saturday of every month from 9-12noon, rain or shine! Trail Crew volunteers provide technical assistance with trail maintenance and construction activities on the trails. Trail Crew volunteer duties consist of clearing rocks, trees, brush and other debris from proposed trail routes; build/repair walk ways, bridges or other structures; grade/fill existing trail paths to ensure user safety; and attend all required meetings and training sessions. Volunteers should bring water, gloves and a tool if available. Volunteers should wear layered clothing and sturdy shoes. A snack and beverage provided for volunteers. Meet at the parking area. For ages 10-17 -- Learn about the friendly horses and goats, and participate in their daily care. Wear sturdy work clothes and tough shoes because this is a "hand-on" experience. You will put a halter on a horse, learn to lead horses safely, brush them, clean their feet and clean their stalls. Everyone will have a chance to sit on a horse (helmet are required and provided, keep hairstyle simple for easy fit). Eat a good breakfast, bring water bottle and wear layers. Solano Land Trust and Solano County Parks are proud to present this popular series of birds of prey hikes of the winter migration season. Lynch Canyon is home to golden eagles and hawks. It is also a magnet for migrating and over-wintering birds of prey. It provides them with over 1,000 undeveloped acres where they can hunt and rest. Some feathered visitors come from as far away as the Arctic Circle. This hike will be between 4-6 miles. Meet in the parking lot. Space is limited. $10 per person.
