Nature Journaling Hike   Saturday,  NOV  16, 2013
9:00 AM

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  Rockville Trails Preserve
Join volunteers Karen Peitz and Jody Lane for a nature journaling hike. Spend an autumn morning hiking and sketching among the oaks and hills of Rockville Trails. Oak trees are home to some, food for others, shade for hikers, and interesting art forms for the sketcher. This event is for all sketching skill levels, and ability to casually walk a couple miles, up/down a hilly landscape, frequently stopping at an oak or group of oak trees. Oak trees come in various sizes, shapes, and forms depending on its species.

WHAT TO BRING: a journal, pencils, pens and/or watercolors, a backpack with plenty of water and snacks, boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with good tread, long, sturdy pants and layered clothes, protection from the elements (sun, wind, fog, rain). Also recommended: Hiking sticks, bug repellent, binoculars, camera.

Parking is limited. Arrive on time and be prepared to carpool or caravan from the meeting place to the trailhead. Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be prepared for the following: A leisurely pace hiking about 2 miles up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and thistle. Rockville Trails is a working ranch—cattle are free range so they roam as they please. All trails are unimproved—expect rough, rocky, uneven ground. Visitors must be accompanied by a docent at all times. Since the preserve is otherwise closed, the entry and exit gate will be locked except for the start and end times of the hike. There is no drinking water. There are no bathrooms. Free, but donations are appreciated!

ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED: Click here to register online, or call Cathy at 707-745-1913. Rain cancels this event.
Leader: Karen Peitz and Jody Lane

Location: Fairfield
DIRECTIONS: Meet promptly and be ready to leave immediately from the big red "Ice House" building on Suisun Valley Ct., near the intersection of Rockville Rd. and Suisun Valley Rd., Fairfield, CA. Carpool or caravan from there to the trailhead.
