9:00 AM CNPS - WILLIS LINN JEPSON CHAPTER Forrest Deaner Native Plant Botanic Garden The Forrest Deaner Native Plant Botanic Garden, established in 2004, is a volunteer effort dedicated to showcasing the Solano County diversity of California's native plants. Every Earth Day we have major projects for all gardening/physical abilities and for all family members. This year your participation is needed even more than ever. No pre-registration is necessary. Please arrive by 9AM. State Parks is waiving the parking fee for volunteers. Bring a hat, sunscreen, comfortable shoes and clothes, and a favorite pair of gardening gloves. Water, refreshments, and other tools will be provided. Parking becomes limited, so please consider walking in from the park entrance (which takes about a 20-minutes) or riding your bike. Dogs on leash are permitted. Sponsored by CNPS - Willis Linn Jepson Chapter, Benicia State Parks Association & the City of Benicia, and Benicia Trees Foundation. 9:30 AM SUISUN MARSH NATURAL HISTORY ASSOCIATION Rockville Hills Park The Suisun Marsh Natural History Association will be holding a 2-hour field trip--Native American Walk - Suisun Indians of the Patwin Nation--in Rockville Hills Park starting at 9:30 am. The interpretive tour will focus on the customs, lifestyles and religious ceremonies of the local Suisun Indians. Binoculars, water, and walking shoes are recommended. This walk may be difficult for small children, as there is some uphill walking. Registration is limited to 25, so enroll today! 10:00 AM SOLANO COUNTY PARKS & SOLANO LAND TRUST Lake Solano Park Take a walk on the wild side to discover our feathered friends! Your guide on this adventure will be docent and bird enthusiast, Barbara Cooper. She's creative, entertaining, and wonderful with children. All ages welcome. The walk is free, and parking is only $5 per vehicle. Make a day of it and bring a picnic lunch for afterwards! WHAT TO BRING: Binoculars (if you have a pair), a backpack with water and snacks, sturdy closed-toe shoes, protection from sun, wind, fog and rain. Also recommended: camera and bug repellent. Lake Solano Park straddles Pleasants Valley Road, near the town of Winters. Park on the east-side of Pleasants Valley Rd, then walk to the courtyard next to the Nature Center on the west-side. 10:00 AM SOLANO LAND TRUST AND RUSH RANCH EDUCATIONAL COUNCIL Rush Ranch Get the Rush is a series of fun and free activities designed for families—all ages and mobility levels are welcome! Choose from several activities: Travel back in time as you enter the historic Rush Ranch Blacksmith Shop. Learn about traditional blacksmithing tools and equipment, and see the forge in the center of the ranch. Join in an interactive demonstration with a smithy, and you may even get the opportunity to make your own iron nail or other keepsake! Or, if weather permits, visit Little Bear at his table full of Native American tools and decorations, most of which he hand-crafted himself. Ask him about his life experiences and the history and culture of Native Americans. Also, if weather and resources permit, take a horse-drawn wagon ride. Wheelchair users are encouraged and can board via a solar-powered wheelchair lift. These rides allow those with limited mobility to experience the freedom and excitement of exploring beautiful open spaces like Rush Ranch with highly trained horses and experienced drivers. Bring: Water, snacks or picnic lunch, bug repellent. Be prepared for variable weather by bringing layered clothes, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and protection from sun, wind, fog, and rain. 10:00 AM SOLANO LAND TRUST Jepson Prairie Jepson Prairie Preserve is one of California’s best remaining examples of vernal pools and native grasslands. Enjoy an easy walk in a portion of the Preserve only accessible with a Jepson Prairie docent. The Preserve explodes into color during its spring wildflower display. Dry and dormant most of the year, the prairie is transformed by winter rains into a tapestry of stunning colors, and its vernal pools host a rich diversity of rare aquatic life. 2:00 PM SOLANO LAND TRUST, SEEING SOLANO ARTISTS, & THE BENICIA PUBLIC LIBRARY Benicia Public Library The program begins at 2pm with a screening of the award-winning film Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and A Land Ethic for Our Time, a production of the Aldo Leopold Foundation, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Center for Humans and Nature. The film shares highlights from Leopold’s life and extraordinary career, explaining how he shaped conservation in the twentieth century and still inspires people today. A Solano Land Trust presentation will follow the movie. Guests will then mingle with artists and enjoy Seeing Solano II: Solano Land Trust through the eyes of artists – the second in a series of exhibits by professional painters and photographers who have independently organized themselves to support Solano Land Trust through exhibits and sales of their art. All the paintings and photographs in this growing collection are inspired by places Solano Land Trust has permanently protected – the rolling hills and grasslands, oak woodlands, ancient vernal pools, lush tidal marshes, and working farms and ranches that make our region unique.
