8:00 AM SOLANO LAND TRUST AND SOLANO COUNTY PARKS Lynch Canyon It isn’t the distance, it’s the elevation gain that makes the 6th Annual Lynch Canyon Trail Run & Community Hike the toughest trail run in Solano County. Three race courses plus a 2.5-mile fun hike offer a range of ways to enjoy fresh air, spectacular views, and great times. A 5K, 10K, Half Marathon and Community Hike all begin at 8am. All three races and the hike are 100% trail. The routes, comprised of about 85% wide track and 15% single track, will take runners along every trail in Lynch Canyon Open Space Park. The 5K has about 400 feet of elevation gain. The 10K features 633 feet of elevation gain; the half marathon, 961. New for 2013, participants who become course record holders receive a free pair of New Balance shoes fitted at Fleet Feet Vacaville. Community hikers travel 2.5 miles at their own pace, on wide trails with about 400 feet of elevation gain. The Community Hike is free and offers a chance to enjoy beautiful scenery and fresh air. Simply show up at the registration table on race day between 6:30 and 7:45am. Race-day registration prices for the 5K, 10K and Half Marathon are $35, $45, and $55, respectively. Runners who pre-register before May 30th save $10. Registration is open now online. Trail maps are available there as well. Racer packet pickup and same-day registration from 6:30 to 7:45am. All proceeds support public access and improvements at Lynch Canyon, and promote the use of its open space for healthy living. Bring the whole family, but no pets. Lynch Canyon is home to a wide variety of wildlife and is a working ranch with free-range cattle. Parking is free for Trail Run and Community Hike participants’ vehicles. 8:00 AM BAY AREA RIDGE TRAIL COUNCIL Benicia State Recreation Area Join the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council and California State Parks in Benicia State Recreation Area, on the shores of Carquinez Strait for National Trails Day! Enjoy the splendid views and camaraderie of a great day's work, as you improve the trails and lean about out the Council's efforts (with our friends at the SF Bay Trail Project) to complete the Carquinez Strait Scenic Loop Trail. Ages 14 and older are welcome to participate; under age 18 must be accompanied by a supervising adult. Please bring work gloves, sunscreen, and a water bottle (with water). and dress in laters for variable weather including rain gear, a hat/visor for sun protection, Event will proceed in light rain, heavy rain cancels. 9:00 AM SOLANO LAND TRUST King-Swett Ranches Join Solano Land Trust docent Jim Walsh for a rigorous hike through the King-Swett Ranches. These ranches are only accessible in the company of trained Solano Land Trust docents, so take advantage of this opportunity to get healthy exercise and see spectacular views. They are working ranches, so cattle may be present. Requires the ability to hike off-trail, through thistle, on uneven ground and hilly terrain. BRING: Backpack, water, snacks or bag lunch, insect repellent. Come prepared for variable weather by bringing layered clothes (including pants, boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes) and protection from sun, wind, fog, and rain. Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be prepared for a strenuous pace hiking 4-6 miles off-trail, up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and thistle. Meet promptly beside Jim's white "TruGreen" pickup truck at the Park-and-Ride lot on the Hiddenbrooke side of the American Canyon/Hiddenbrooke Parkway exit, off Interstate 80. 10:00 AM SOLANO COUNTY PARKS Lake Solano County Park Guided tours of Lake Solano Park are offered throughout the summer and fall from 10 am to noon on the first and third Saturdays of each month. All ages are welcome. The tours are free, and parking is only $5 per vehicle. Make a day of it by bringing a picnic lunch for afterwards, or stay and camp the whole weekend! WHAT TO BRING: $5 cash for parking, water, sturdy closed-toe shoes, protection from sun (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen). Also recommended: camera, binoculars, bug repellent, a picnic lunch for afterwards. Enjoy cake and refreshments, and visits from our education animals. Learn how we care for our local wildlife. See the baby bird nursery, native plant garden, and our new Raccoon and Screech Owl enclosures. There will be lots of activities for kids! You can help support a baby duck, jackrabbit, raccoon, squirrel, owl or songbird by sponsoring their care for just one month. Learn about baby raccoons, jackrabbits, opossums and birds. Find out if you have what it takes to be a volunteer and work with wildlife! Or you can bring some badly needed supplies such as: apples and grapes, laundry soap, bleach, Dawn dishwashing soap, heating pads, or garden hoses.
