9:30 AM SIERRA CLUB REDWOOD CHAPTER Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve Hike along the Historic Southshore of Mare Island to Pier 35 for great views of San Pablo Bay and Carquinez Strait. Visit the Mare Island Naval Shipyard Cemetery dating from 1858, and see Great Blue Heron and Osprey nests. This is a level 4-mile walk on paved and gravel roads in the Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve. Leader: Kenn Browne Location: Vallejo DIRECTIONS: Take U.S. 101, I-80 or Hwy 29 to Highway 37 and take the Mare Island exit just west of Vallejo. Follow Walnut Ave. south to ‘G’ St. (1st stop sign) and turn left. Take the 2nd right at Nimitz and go to 15th St. stop sign and turn right. Go to Railroad Ave. and turn left. Follow Railroad through the South Gate to the Park kiosk and park along the road. |

10:00 AM SOLANO LAND TRUST Jepson Prairie On Saturday, January 8th from 10am to 1pm, join raptor expert Larry Broderick and birder Earl Swenerton at Solano Land Trust’s Jepson Prairie Preserve for their third annual Eagles, Hawks & other Birds of Prey Tour. At this time of year participants can see red-tailed hawks, harriers, and kestrels, and will be on the lookout for migratory golden eagles, ferruginous hawks, merlins, and burrowing owls. This will be an easy, meandering walk in a portion of Jepson Prairie Preserve only accessible with a Solano Land Trust guide. Bring water, a snack or bag lunch, binoculars, and waterproof boots. Come prepared for variable weather (bring layered clothes and protection from sun, wind, fog, and rain). A donation is suggested but not required. This outdoor volunteer opportunity includes restoration, maintenance, and improvement projects. You'll learn about the importance of native species, the impact of introduced species, and how soil, plants, animals, light and moisture levelsinteract in an ecosystem. Bring gloves, pants, windbreaker, sunscreen, hat, water, snack, insect repellant. Requires the ability to hike in about 1 mile and around a site with uneven terrain. RSVP required. Locations vary. Lynch Canyon has beautiful vistas and it’s closed to the public until February 11, 2011, so take advantage of this special opportunity to visit! The Suisun Marsh and Rush Ranch are prime birdwatching sites because they are an important stop on the Pacific Flyway, the major north-south route for migratory birds, as well as an area where hundreds of species choose to overwinter.
