Our land is our future, so jump in with your boots on! Join SLT Land Steward, Ken Poerner, for a range of outdoor volunteer opportunities including litter removal, trail maintenance, construction, and other improvement projects. Meet at the Lynch Canyon entrance gate at 9am (gate locks behind us). RSVP appreciated but not required.

Mare Island Southshore   Saturday,  JAN  8, 2011

SIERRA CLUB REDWOOD CHAPTER —  Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve
Hike along the Historic Southshore of Mare Island to Pier 35 for great views of San Pablo Bay and Carquinez Strait. Visit the Mare Island Naval Shipyard Cemetery dating from 1858, and see Great Blue Heron and Osprey nests. This is a level 4-mile walk on paved and gravel roads in the Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve.

DIRECTIONS: Take U.S. 101, I-80 or Hwy 29 to Highway 37 and take the Mare Island exit just west of Vallejo. Follow Walnut Ave. south to ‘G’ St. (1st stop sign) and turn left. Take the 2nd right at Nimitz and go to 15th St. stop sign and turn right. Go to Railroad Ave. and turn left. Follow Railroad through the South Gate to the Park kiosk and park along the road.

 
Eagles, Hawks & other Birds of Prey Tour    Saturday,  JAN  8, 2011

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  Jepson Prairie
On Saturday, January 8th from 10am to 1pm, join raptor expert Larry Broderick and birder Earl Swenerton at Solano Land Trust’s Jepson Prairie Preserve for their third annual Eagles, Hawks & other Birds of Prey Tour. At this time of year participants can see red-tailed hawks, harriers, and kestrels, and will be on the lookout for migratory golden eagles, ferruginous hawks, merlins, and burrowing owls. This will be an easy, meandering walk in a portion of Jepson Prairie Preserve only accessible with a Solano Land Trust guide. Bring water, a snack or bag lunch, binoculars, and waterproof boots. Come prepared for variable weather (bring layered clothes and protection from sun, wind, fog, and rain). A donation is suggested but not required. Bats: Unsung heroes of pest management! Bat expert Corky Quirk of NorCalBats will give a presentation about bats native to California. Corky uses live bats to illustrate the importance of bats in our environment, some of the issues they face, and the harmful myths that surround them. 'Citizen Science Friday' Land Stewardship Volunteer Opportunity   Friday,  JAN  21, 2011

"Citizen Science Friday" is led by SLT staff scientist, Sue Wickham. This outdoor volunteer opportunity includes restoration, maintenance, and improvement projects. You'll learn about the importance of native species, the impact of introduced species, and how soil, plants, animals, light and moisture levelsinteract in an ecosystem. Bring gloves, pants, windbreaker, sunscreen, hat, water, snack, insect repellant. Requires the ability to hike in about 1 mile and around a site with uneven terrain. RSVP required. Locations vary. You’ll learn identification, behavior, and ecology of these majestic birds. Broderick has 25 years of experience studying raptors, and he loves to share his insights in an entertaining way. Lynch Canyon has beautiful vistas and it’s closed to the public until February 11, 2011, so take advantage of this special opportunity to visit!

Meet at 10am sharp (gate locks behind us) at the Lynch Canyon entrance gate: Intersection of Lynch Road & McGary Road, Vallejo, CA. Bring water, snack or bag lunch, and binoculars. Be prepared for variable weather (bring layered clothes and protection from both sun and wind). All ages are welcome. You must be able to hike four miles at a moderate pace, up and down steep hills. Entomologist and UC Davis Professor Emeritus, Robbin Thorp, gives an interesting and educational lecture on bees. He'll show exhibits with museum specimens of bees and their nests. We'll learn about the bees native to our area, including their importance as pollinators.

Bird Walk at Rush Ranch   Saturday,  JAN  29, 2011

RUSH RANCH EDUCATIONAL COUNCIL —  Rush Ranch
Join us for our Bird Walk led by local bird expert, Joanne Castro. The Suisun Marsh and Rush Ranch are prime birdwatching sites because they are an important stop on the Pacific Flyway, the major north-south route for migratory birds, as well as an area where hundreds of species choose to overwinter.
