5th Annual REI - Ridge Trail Service Day   Saturday,  NOV  3, 2012

CITY OF BENICIA AND REI - BRENTWOOD —  Rollye Wiskerson Trail
Join the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council, REI, Chipotle Mexican Grill, and our park agency partners for the 5th Annual REI - Ridge Trail Service Day to volunteer on the Ridge Trail near you! In 2012, we'll have a record-setting 15 projects! The Service Day is our largest annual event, and a clear display of the Ridge Trail's regional nature. Each Bay Area REI joins with local land managers to host volunteer work parties on a nearby section of the Trail. Over the past four years, a total of 1,700 volunteers donated more than 7,300 hours while working on 48 projects, building & improving miles of trail and restoring adjacent open space and habitat. Chipotle is again generously donating their tasty burritos for lunch (where restaurants are available). In Solano County, please join us to improve the Ridge Trail on the Rollye Wiskerson Trail. Advance Registration required: Registration opens Mon Sept 10. Sign up early, as sites fill up fast!

 
Hike at King-Swett Ranches   Saturday,  NOV  3, 2012

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  King-Swett Ranches
Join Solano Land Trust docent Jim Walsh for a rigorous hike through the King-Swett Ranches. These ranches are only accessible in the company of trained Solano Land Trust docents, so take advantage of this opportunity to get healthy exercise and see spectacular views. They are working ranches, so cattle may be present. Requires the ability to hike off-trail, through thistle, on uneven ground and hilly terrain. BRING: Backpack, water, snacks or bag lunch, insect repellent. Come prepared for variable weather by bringing layered clothes (including pants, boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes) and protection from sun, wind, fog, and rain. Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be prepared for a strenuous pace hiking 4-6 miles off-trail, up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and thistle. Meet promptly beside Jim's white "TruGreen" pickup truck at the Park-and-Ride lot on the Hiddenbrooke side of the American Canyon/Hiddenbrooke Parkway exit, off Interstate 80. Be ready to carpool or caravan from there. Heavy rain cancels—call Jim at 916-870-4824 if the weather is uncertain. Volunteer Day at Rush Ranch   Saturday,  NOV  3, 2012

Our land is our future, so jump in with your boots on! Rush Ranch is over 2,000 acres of tidal marsh and upland grasses. Help Solano Land Trust's Land Steward, Ken Poerner, maintain it through litter removal, trail maintenance, construction, and other improvement projects. Come prepared for variable weather by bringing layered clothes (including pants, boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes) and protection from sun, wind, fog, and rain. Meet in the Rush Ranch courtyard. A Walk at Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve   Saturday,  NOV  10, 2012

SIERRA CLUB REDWOOD CHAPTER —  Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve
We will walk to the highest point on Mare Island and encounter various wildflowers and spectacular views towards the Carquinez Strait and San Pablo Bay with the likelihood of seeing fledgling ospreys and great blue herons along the way. The route also includes various historical features along the way. This walk is a fairly easy 3.0 mile r/t walk on paved roads. Class E-4-A.

Raptor Tour   Saturday,  NOV  10, 2012

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  Lynch Canyon
Join the Solano Land Trust Raptor Team for a tour featuring resident, migrating and over-wintering birds of prey at Lynch Canyon on Saturday, November 10 from 10am to 2pm. Take advantage of this special opportunity to discover, observe and learn about eagles, hawks and other raptors because the park is otherwise closed to the public until mid-March. Previous sightings include golden eagles, Cooper’s hawks, ferruginous hawks, American kestrels, white-tailed kites, red-tailed hawks, Northern harriers and a bald eagle. All ages are welcome, but participants must be prepared for a moderate pace covering about 4 miles, possibly off-trail in places, up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants and thistle, and passing free range cattle along the way. Bring: a backpack with plenty of water and snacks, boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with tread for rough, steep and slippery terrain, long, sturdy pants and layered clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, protection from sun, wind, fog and rain, cash for donation (suggested but not required). Also recommended: binoculars, a camera, bug repellent and hiking sticks. Tour is free but donations are appreciated. RSVP requested (but not required) to Mary Beth at 707-685-5908, or by email. Meet in the Lynch Canyon parking lot at 10am sharp. Since Lynch Canyon is otherwise closed, the gate will be locked except for the tour’s 10am start time and 2pm end time. Each year at this time, we open our doors to our members, neighbors and friends. If you haven't seen our wonderful wildlife displays, come check them out! Even if you’ve been there before, you probably haven’t met Bandit, our newest addition to our resident non-releasable wildlife. Come by and say hello – he’ll love it! Resident Screech Owl Milo also has a new outside home, so come see him! Tours will be given and refreshments offered to all who come. Join us from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. We will also be introducing the animals from our education program. At 12:00 and 2:00, weather permitting, there will be demonstrations with Sool, our resident Golden Eagle.

Rockville Hills Regional Park Trail Crew   Saturday,  NOV  17, 2012

CITY OF FAIRFIELD —  Rockville Hills Regional Park
The Rockville Trail Crew volunteer work days are scheduled for the third Saturday of every month from 9-12noon, rain or shine! Trail Crew volunteers provide technical assistance with trail maintenance and construction activities on the trails. Trail Crew volunteer duties consist of clearing rocks, trees, brush and other debris from proposed trail routes; build/repair walk ways, bridges or other structures; grade/fill existing trail paths to ensure user safety; and attend all required meetings and training sessions. Volunteers should bring water, gloves and a tool if available. Volunteers should wear layered clothing and sturdy shoes. A snack and beverage provided for volunteers. Meet at the parking area. Get the Rush is a series of fun and free activities designed for families—all ages and mobility levels are welcome! Choose from several activities: Travel back in time as you enter the historic Rush Ranch Blacksmith Shop. Learn about traditional blacksmithing tools and equipment, and see the forge in the center of the ranch. Join in an interactive demonstration with a smithy, and you may even get the opportunity to make your own iron nail or other keepsake! Or, if weather permits, visit Little Bear at his table full of Native American tools and decorations, most of which he hand-crafted himself. Ask him about his life experiences and the history and culture of Native Americans. Also, if weather and resources permit, take a horse-drawn wagon ride. Wheelchair users are encouraged and can board via a solar-powered wheelchair lift. These rides allow those with limited mobility to experience the freedom and excitement of exploring beautiful open spaces like Rush Ranch with highly trained horses and experienced drivers. Bring: Water, snacks or picnic lunch, bug repellent. Be prepared for variable weather by bringing layered clothes, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and protection from sun, wind, fog, and rain. Downtown Vacaville comes alive once again for the 30th Anniversary of Merriment On Main. This grand tradition, which was started by The Reporter and partners with the Historic Downtown community, is an annual favorite that you don’t want to miss! This year, The Reporter and the Downtown Merchants are going all out to decorate “The Heart Of The City” for the Holiday Season. On Tuesday, November 27th there will be the tree lighting, carols will be sung throughout Downtown, there’s also a live Nativity scene, and Santa will be arriving once again to kick off “Merriment On Main”. All the fun starts at 4:30 so come early and carol with your friends as you stroll along Main, Merchant, Parker, Davis and the other Downtown locations.
