Geology Trek: Where Did All These Rocks Come From?   Saturday,  NOV  2, 2013
9:00 AM

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  Rockville Trails Preserve
Explore the rock types and sources at Rockville Trails Preserve with docent Lorenzo Burch. Are the rocks related to the collision of the Pacific Plate and underlying movement beneath the North American Plate? What is under the ground of the Preserve? Did you know you can see a portion of the Cordelia Fault line at the Preserve? What is the relationship of that fault and the nearby Green Valley fault to the San Andreas Fault? Where was the nearest volcano? When were these rock formations created? This is not a technical geology hike--it is a layperson’s physical geography trek. WHAT TO BRING: a backpack with plenty of water and snacks, boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with good tread, long, sturdy pants and layered clothes, protection from the elements (sun, wind, fog, rain). Recommended: Hiking sticks, bug repellent, binoculars, camera.

Nature Walk Folklore at Lake Solano Park   Saturday,  NOV  9, 2013
10:00 AM

SOLANO COUNTY PARKS & SOLANO LAND TRUST —  Lake Solano
Join volunteer Barbara Cooper to admire our feathered friends at Lake Solano on Saturday November 9, 2013 . She’ll share why this area is a magnet for both year-round residents and migratory birds. Learn how birds have figured in myths and religions of the world and other “bird lore”. For instance, did you know that ravens are enlisted as military birds for England and kept in the Tower of London. Did you know that the expression “eat crow,” which refers to making a difficult apology, is derived from eating the tough, unappetizing flesh of older crows? Listen to amazing facts and fables as you stroll along Putah Creek on this “not-so-usual” bird walk. Dress in layers and be prepared for cold, wet weather. Don’t forget to bring binoculars, cameras and an inquiring mind with you. No RSVP is necessary. Heavy rain cancels. Lunch at the Marsh   Tuesday,  NOV  26, 2013
10:00 AM

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  Rush Ranch
Before Thanksgiving feasts and Black Friday frenzies, take a leisurely stroll and have a relaxing picnic lunch at the marsh. Volunteers will lead a guided walk alongside the marsh at Rush Ranch. As you tour this part of Suisun Marsh, you’ll learn how the tide affects its unique food web. After learning what marsh animals eat for their lunch, enjoy your own lunch under the trees. Meet at 10am beside the maps and murals in the Rush Ranch courtyard, just outside the entrance to the Nature Center. Expect to return from the walk and finish the picnic at about noon. You’ll come away knowing why Suisun Marsh is special throughout the Bay Area and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, and why Rush Ranch in particular is locally loved and nationally famous! Volunteer Gayle Vaughan will be your guide. BRING: Your own picnic lunch and water for the walk. Be prepared for variable weather by bringing layered clothes, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and protection from sun, wind, and fog. Also recommended: binoculars, camera, and bug repellent. 10:00am – 12:00pm, RAIN CANCELS.
