SOLANO LAND TRUST —  King-Swett Ranches
Join Solano Land Trust docent Jim Walsh for a rigorous hike through the King-Swett Ranches. Field Trip to Flannery & Robinson Roads   Saturday,  DEC  8, 2012
7:30 AM

NAPA - SOLANO AUDUBON SOCIETY —  Eastern Solano County
Late fall is a great time to bird the rolling hills and pastures of eastern Solano County. Wintering raptors have arrived in full, including Rough-legged Hawk, Golden Eagle and Prairie Falcon. This year, central California is experiencing an ‘irruption’ of Ferriginous Hawk, and we will see several. We’ll also search hard for Mountain Plover and Burrowing Owl. Lots of birders visit the area so we should have plenty of advance information about these elusive species and be up to date on the presence of any rarities. Specialty songbirds include Loggerhead Shrike, Horned Lark, and Lark Sparrow. Expect large flocks of Long-billed Curlew. The trip is roadside birding, our route follows Creed, Robinson, Flannery and adjacent roads. We will finish up at Jepson Prairie. Carpooling is important, to ensure that everyone sees every bird. Beginning a little after 8:30 birders will slowly head east from the corner of Creed and Branscombe Rds; however, to limit the number of cars, please try to meet at a carpool location. A reminder from the Field Trip Coordinator: Car-poolers will share driving expenses (recommended $.30/mi to be split by the number of riders).

Rush Ranch 'Get the Rush'   Saturday,  DEC  15, 2012
10:00 AM

SOLANO LAND TRUST AND RUSH RANCH EDUCATIONAL COUNCIL —  Rush Ranch
Get the Rush is a series of fun and free activities designed for families—all ages and mobility levels are welcome! Choose from several activities: Travel back in time as you enter the historic Rush Ranch Blacksmith Shop. Learn about traditional blacksmithing tools and equipment, and see the forge in the center of the ranch. Join in an interactive demonstration with a smithy, and you may even get the opportunity to make your own iron nail or other keepsake! Or, if weather permits, visit Little Bear at his table full of Native American tools and decorations, most of which he hand-crafted himself. Ask him about his life experiences and the history and culture of Native Americans. Also, if weather and resources permit, take a horse-drawn wagon ride. Wheelchair users are encouraged and can board via a solar-powered wheelchair lift. These rides allow those with limited mobility to experience the freedom and excitement of exploring beautiful open spaces like Rush Ranch with highly trained horses and experienced drivers. Bring: Water, snacks or picnic lunch, bug repellent. Be prepared for variable weather by bringing layered clothes, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and protection from sun, wind, fog, and rain. 10:00 AM

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  Rush Ranch
Join special guest Sarah Ferner and a team of volunteers for a free guided walk at Rush Ranch. Rain or shine, meet at 10am at the wall map in the Rush Ranch courtyard, just outside the entrance to the Nature Center. (If the rain is too heavy for an enjoyable walk, Sarah and team will guide you through the natural and human history exhibit in the Nature Center). Take advantage of this opportunity if you can because Sarah is a fun and engaging speaker for all ages, and she's a marsh expert with the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Use all five senses as you travel alongside the tidal marsh and through the upland grasses. Take in sweeping views of the marsh and mountains. Examine plants like cattails, pickleweed, and salt grass and consider their unique adaptations to survive in a marsh environment. Bring water, snacks or a picnic lunch, and bug repellent. Be prepared for variable weather by bringing layered clothes, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and protection from sun, wind, fog, and the chance of rain. Binoculars and a camera are also recommended.
