Tour at King-Swett Ranches

9:00 AM SOLANO LAND TRUST King-Swett Ranches Join Jim Walsh for a rigorous hike through the King-Swett Ranches. These ranches are only accessible in the company of trained Solano Land Trust docents, so take advantage of this opportunity to get healthy exercise and see spectacular views. They are working ranches, so cattle may be present. Requires the ability to hike off-trail, through thistle, on uneven ground and hilly terrain. 8:00 AM NAPA-SOLANO AUDUBON SOCIETY This is one of the Napa-Solano Audubon Society-sponsored events for the 2011 San Francisco Bay Flyway Festival. We will bird Eucalyptus Drive and part of the newly opened American Canyon Wetlands trail which goes to the Napa River as time permits. This area is part of the Pacific Flyway for migrating waterfowl. We expect to see winter ducks and woodland birds in the Eucalyptus trees. If the tide is accommodating, we will see shore birds. 9:30 AM SIERRA CLUB REDWOOD CHAPTER Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve Hike along the Historic Southshore of Mare Island to Pier 35 for great views of San Pablo Bay and Carquinez Strait. Visit the Mare Island Naval Shipyard Cemetery dating from 1858, and see Great Blue Heron and Osprey nests. This is a level, 4-mile walk on paved and gravel roads in the Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve. Leader: Brian Collett Location: Vallejo DIRECTIONS: Take U.S. 101, I-80 or Hwy. 29 to Highway 37 and take the Mare Island exit just west of Vallejo. Follow Walnut Ave. south to ‘G’ St. (1st stop sign) and turn left. Take the 2nd right at Nimitz and go to 15th St. stop sign and turn right. Go to Railroad Ave. and turn left. Follow Railroad through the South Gate to the Park kiosk and park along the road. |

This is one of the NSAS-sponsored events for the 2011 San Francisco Bay Flyway Festival. This will be a short one hour walk along the edges of ponds adjacent to the trail to look at ducks, wading birds, songbirds & raptors. Binoculars are available on loan with guidance from our education volunteers. Resource materials provided. Meet at the American Canyon Wetland parking area. THIS EVENT WILL BE REPEATED at 1PM. This outdoor volunteer opportunity includes restoration, maintenance, and improvement projects. You'll learn about the importance of native species, the impact of introduced species, and how soil, plants, animals, light and moisture levelsinteract in an ecosystem. 9:00 AM SOLANO LAND TRUST King-Swett Ranches The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council and Solano Land Trust invite you to help maintain and monitor Blue Rock Trail where it intersects with Vallejo Swett Ranch. The Ridge Trail comes up from Blue Rock Park, into the Vallejo Swett Ranch, and in the future will cross the Swett Ranch to connect to the Hiddenbrooke open space. This trail is an ongoing project but this event will concentrate on fencing, trail work and sign installation. Bring Backpack, snacks or bag lunch, insect repellent, work gloves.
