6th Annual Lynch Canyon Trail Run and Community Hike   Saturday,  JUN  1, 2013
8:00 AM

SOLANO LAND TRUST, SOLANO COUNTY PARKS, BAY AREA RIDGE TRAIL —  Lynch Canyon
It isn’t the distance, it’s the elevation gain that makes the 6th Annual Lynch Canyon Trail Run & Community Hike the toughest trail run in Solano County. Three race courses plus a 2.5-mile fun hike offer a range of ways to enjoy fresh air, spectacular views, and great times. A 5K, 10K, Half Marathon and Community Hike all begin at 8am. All three races and the hike are 100% trail. The routes, comprised of about 85% wide track and 15% single track, will take runners along every trail in Lynch Canyon Open Space Park. The 5K has about 400 feet of elevation gain. The 10K features 633 feet of elevation gain; the half marathon, 961. New for 2013, participants who become course record holders receive a free pair of New Balance shoes fitted at Fleet Feet Vacaville. Community hikers travel 2.5 miles at their own pace, on wide trails with about 400 feet of elevation gain. The Community Hike is free and offers a chance to enjoy beautiful scenery and fresh air. Simply show up at the registration table on race day between 6:30 and 7:45am. Race-day registration prices for the 5K, 10K and Half Marathon are $35, $45, and $55, respectively. Runners who pre-register before May 30th save $10. Registration is open now online. Trail maps are available there as well. Racer packet pickup and same-day registration from 6:30 to 7:45am. All proceeds support public access and improvements at Lynch Canyon, and promote the use of its open space for healthy living. Bring the whole family, but no pets. Lynch Canyon is home to a wide variety of wildlife and is a working ranch with free-range cattle. Parking is free for Trail Run and Community Hike participants’ vehicles. Hike at King-Swett Ranches   Saturday,  JUN  1, 2013
9:00 AM

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  King-Swett Ranches
Come explore the hills between Fairfield, Benicia, and Vallejo! You'll be led by Jim Walsh and/or James Chang, both expert Solano Land Trust guides who know this area—known as the King-Swett Ranches—inside out. They'll share insights about the birds and other wildlife that call this area home, and give you a great workout! Take advantage of this special opportunity if you can because the King-Swett Ranches are otherwise closed. Bring: a backpack with plenty of water and snacks, boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with tread for rugged, steep, and slippery off-trail terrain, long, sturdy pants and layered clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, protection from the elements (sun, wind, fog, rain). Recommended: binoculars, camera, bug repellent, hiking sticks, gaiters. Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be prepared: a strenuous pace hiking 4-6 miles off-trail, up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and thistle. The King-Swett Ranches are working ranches—cattle are free range so they roam as they please. Very heavy rain cancels—call Jim at 916-870-4824 if the weather is uncertain.
Leader: Jim Walsh or James Chang
Location: Vallejo
DIRECTIONS: Meet Jim and/or James promptly at the Park-and-Ride lot where McGary Road, Hiddenbrooke Parkway, and American Canyon Road intersect (on the Hiddenbrooke side of the American Canyon/Hiddenbrooke Parkway exit, off Interstate 80). (Jim has a white "TruGreen" pickup truck). Be ready to carpool or caravan from there.

Patwin Charmstones & Pioneer Rock Walls   Saturday,  JUN  29, 2013
8:00 AM

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  Rockville Trails
Learn about our local human history—from Patwin charmstones to pioneer rock walls—on a guided hike of Rockville Trails with docent John McVicar. Take advantage of this opportunity if you can because access to Rockville Trails is only by docent-led hikes at this time. Space is limited and registration is required. WHAT TO BRING: A backpack with plenty of water and snacks, boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with tread for rugged, steep, and potentially slippery terrain, long, sturdy pants and layered clothes, protection from the elements (sun, wind, fog, and the chance of rain). Also recommended: binoculars, camera, bug repellent, hiking sticks. WHAT TO BE PREPARED FOR: Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be prepared to hike up and down hills at an intermediate pace. Rockville Trails is a working ranch—cattle are free range so they roam as they please. Visitors must be accompanied by a docent at all times. Since the park is otherwise closed, the entry and exit gate will be locked except for the start and end times of the hike. There is no drinking water. There are no bathrooms. Take only pictures, leave only footprints, and maintain a safe distance from wildlife (for example, rattlesnakes). Register online or call Natalie at 707-432-0150 x200.

BAY AREA RIDGE TRAIL —  Green Valley Falls
One of the most picturesque places in Solano County, this waterfall vies for the title of most beautiful in the Bay Area. The falls flow all year long and it is cool and inviting even on a hot day. The hike is fairly short, but there are some steep and difficult spots. The hike should last about 3 hours. The City of Vallejo limits each hike to 30 people. We'll take reservations on a first-come first-served basis. You must bring a photo ID, be older than 12 years old, and be accompanied by a parent or guardian if you are under 18. Riding the Solano Greenbelt   Saturday,  JUN  29, 2013
9:00 AM

GREENBELT ALLIANCE AND SOLANO CYCLING CLUB —  Vacaville-Dixon Greenbelt
Join us for a weekend bike ride with the Solano Cycling Club as we explore the fields and orchards of the Bay Area’s incredibly rich soil. Starting from the urban edge, we’ll learn about the strong agricultural protection measures enacted by the people, cities, and Solano County, while also looking at current development pressures threatening to diminish the prime farmland between Vacaville and Dixon. Note: While there will be many opportunities to rest and learn along the ride, if you are uncomfortable riding your bicycle above a 10 mph pace over a 30 mile distance, this might not be the right ride for you. There will be opportunities to resupply food and water during the trip. If you are unable to carry enough food and drink for yourself, please contact Adam Garcia to determine extra carrying capacity.
