Discover a different point of view this July 4 with a Moonlight and Fireworks Hike at Lynch Canyon. Join docent Lawrence Sander for this after-dark hike up steep hills to the Bay Area Ridge Trail on Wednesday, July 4, from 8pm to about 11:30pm. Depending on what kind of visibility the weather provides, hikers should be able to see various communities’ fireworks between Lynch Canyon and San Francisco starting at 9:30pm. What’s certain is that a 99 percent full moon will rise at 9:19pm, perfectly timed to illuminate the hike back down to the park exit. Assemble at the entry gate between 7:30 and 8pm. Since the hike is after-hours, the gate will be locked except for entry between 7:30 and 8pm and exit at approximately 11:30pm. What to bring: Flashlight or headlamp; drinking water; snacks; closed-toe shoes that grip; jacket, pants and other layered clothes in case of wind and cold; and bug repellent. Binoculars may be desirable too. Leave pets, fireworks, and alcohol at home. There is no cost, but reservations are required. 9:00 AM SOLANO LAND TRUST King-Swett Ranches Join Solano Land Trust docent Jim Walsh for a rigorous hike through the King-Swett Ranches. These ranches are only accessible in the company of trained Solano Land Trust docents, so take advantage of this opportunity to get healthy exercise and see spectacular views. They are working ranches, so cattle may be present. Requires the ability to hike off-trail, through thistle, on uneven ground and hilly terrain. BRING: Backpack, water, snacks or bag lunch, insect repellent. Come prepared for variable weather by bringing layered clothes (including pants, boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes) and protection from sun, wind, fog, and rain. Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be prepared for a strenuous pace hiking 4-6 miles off-trail, up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and thistle. Meet promptly beside Jim's white "TruGreen" pickup truck at the Park-and-Ride lot on the Hiddenbrooke side of the American Canyon/Hiddenbrooke Parkway exit, off Interstate 80. You learn about the importance of native species, the impact of invasive non-native species, and how soil, plants, animals, light and moisture levels interact in an ecosystem. Choose from several activities: Travel back in time as you enter the historic Rush Ranch Blacksmith Shop. Learn about traditional blacksmithing tools and equipment, and see the forge in the center of the ranch. Join in an interactive demonstration with a smithy, and you may even get the opportunity to make your own iron nail or other keepsake! Or, if weather permits, visit Little Bear at his table full of Native American tools and decorations, most of which he hand-crafted himself. Ask him about his life experiences and the history and culture of Native Americans. Also, if weather and resources permit, take a horse-drawn wagon ride. Wheelchair users are encouraged and can board via a solar-powered wheelchair lift. These rides allow those with limited mobility to experience the freedom and excitement of exploring beautiful open spaces like Rush Ranch with highly trained horses and experienced drivers. 7:30 PM RUSH RANCH EDUCATIONAL COUNCIL AND SOLANO LAND TRUST Rush Ranch CURIOUS ABOUT CONSTELLATIONS? PONDERING THE PLANETS? If so, then don’t miss a Rush Ranch stargazing event led by local astronomy enthusiast, Jim Jerrell, who will share his 30+ years of celestial knowledge. The evening begins at 7:30 pm with a short presentation in the Rush Ranch Nature Center. Outdoor viewing begins when darkness falls. Telescopes will be on hand. Personal scopes & binoculars are welcome, but be familiar with their setup and use. Mosquito repellant and warm clothing are a must. Children are welcome, but must remain supervised at all times. Flashlights must be covered with red cellophane. In order to preserve night vision we ask that all latecomers turn off their headlights when pulling into the parking lot.
